ITINERARY
DAY 1 - US/CAIRO
Fly from your home to New York and join our EgyptAir flight to Cairo, or fly to Cairo on your own.DAY 2 - CAIRO
Upon your arrival in Cairo you will be met by Museum Tours staff and taken to the 5-Star Mena House Hotel, the "Palace at the Foot of the Pyramids". There will be a Welcome Reception in the evening.DAY 3 - GIZA
This morning we will tour the Giza Plateau, including the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Solar Boat museum, the Valley Temple of Khafra and the Sphinx. After lunch you can relax at the hotel or join us for a walking to of the Plateau, visiting the pyramids of Khafra and Menkaura.DAY 4 - SAQQARA / LUXOR This morning we will drive to Saqqara where we will see the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the Pyramid and causeway of Unas and the Pyramid of Teti with its pyramid texts. After lunch we will visit the outdoor museum at the ancient capitol of Memphis before heading to the airport for our flight to Luxor. Upon arrival we will transfer to the Pavilion section of the Winter Palace Hotel.
DAY 5 - LUXOR - Today we will begin our exploration of the Valley of the Kings. We will explore 4 tombs, conducting our exploration in chronological order. First, we will visit the seldom seen tomb KV20, burial place of Hatshepsut. This will be followed by visits to KV 34, tomb of Thutmose III, and two royal reburials, KV38 (Thutmose I) and KV42 (Thutmose II?). After a late lunch you can either return to the hotel or join us for an optional visit the temple of Hatshepsut at Dier el Bahri.Study Leader (Tentative)
Edwin "Ted" Brock has lived in Egypt since 1983. He obtained a B.A. and M.A. in history from the State University of New York at Binghamton, where he majored in ancient history and Near Eastern studies, including Arabic. He has done graduate studies at the University of Toronto where his dissertation is a study of New Kingdom royal sarcophagi.
Ted first came to Egypt in 1981 as a member of the University of Toronto Wadi Tumilat Project working in the East Delta. In addition to four seasons with that project, he has also participated in excavations with the Akhenaten Temple Project at East Karnak, the Dakhlah Oasis Project, New York University's Apis Embalming House Project at Memphis and the Royal Ontario Museum Lahun Expedition.
Ted was a member of the Theban Mapping Project and was co-director of the Amenmeses Project, involved in the clearance and documentation of KV 10 (and the discovers of KV63). He has also been involved for many years documenting the New Kingdom royal sarcophagi of the post-Amarna period.
He participated as project photographer for three seasons with the American Research Center in Egypt Field School and as Egyptological consultant and photographer for the Valley of the Kings Research Group. Between 1983 and 1994 he served as director of the Canadian Institute in Egypt.
